Cambodia Imposes Life Sentences in Cyber Scam Crackdown
Cambodia has enacted sweeping legislation targeting cybercrime networks, introducing life imprisonment for offenders. The new law marks the country's first comprehensive framework to combat online fraud, which has turned Cambodia into a global hub for scams ranging from fake investments to romance schemes.
Authorities have intensified raids since July, shuttering hundreds of suspected operations. Many involve trafficked workers lured by false job promises and forced into exploitative conditions. Penalties now scale with severity: 5-10 years for basic cybercrimes, 20 years for cases involving trafficking or violence, and life sentences if deaths occur.
